Outer Space Club

Outer Space Club-To-Go
from Harshman Middle School in Indianapolis

Attire: Galaxy print, black shirts, NASA clothes, star stickers kids can put all over themselves

Raffle Prize Ideas: Moon pies, pop rocks candy, cosmic brownies

@ Sign In Table: When kids enter Club, pass out pieces of strings for them to tie on their wrists. These will later help you divide them into teams. Each string color can represent a planet, for which you can make posters if you’re really feeling it. (Neptune is blue, Mars is red, Jupiter is orange, and Saturn is yellow.)

MIXER: Astronaut Training
Split into the 4 teams mentioned above. Play music and encourage students to start walking around away from their group members (similar to “Backpack Baby Bunkbed” game style.) Pause the music to cue student’s listening to the action commanded from the microphone. Each team has to prepare for their space mission by following these verbal commands. TIP: You could visual display of each of these cues for students to refer to during the game.

  • Ignite your engine: Spin around 2 times
  • Lightspeed: Run around the cones and back
  • Anti-gravity: Jump in place
  • Lost in Space: Mingle then find all of your team
  • Meteor shower: Toss balloons at people around you – if you get hit sit down

Supplies: music, cones, balloons

GAME: Land your Egg
In your teams, have students group into teams of 2-3 people. They must work together to “build a spaceship” that can safely land an egg-astronaut when dropped from various heights. Give students 8-10 minutes to create spaceships from the supplies you give them. TIP: Lay a sheet underneath the drop zone to make clean up easier.

Suggested supplies: boxes / kleenex box / shoe boxes, paper bags, paper, tape, scissors, eggs

MIXER: Shoot your Rocket
The object of this game is for kids to fly their rockets through a series of space rings. Hang hula hoops, so they suspend at varying levels from above the ground. Kids can create their rockets by balling up pieces of aluminum foil. Players, one team at a time, should line up and take turns tossing their rocket ships through the series of rings, rapidly. Score one point for every ring a ship sails through without hitting the sides. The team who scores the most points wins!

Supplies: hula hoops, aluminum foil

DECOR: Black rolls of paper with painted metallic stars, star garland (Amazon), simple painted solar system on the wall, hula hoops with streamers dangling
